What does a session look like?
Receiving Reiki is a very simple process. The session begins with you lying on your back on a massage table, fully clothed, while listening to serene music, in order to help you relax and feel comfortable. I will then gently lay my hands upon you, in a series of different positions, from the crown of the head to the feet. If preferred, no touching at all need be done – the hands can be held a few inches above the body, with the same benefits resulting from the treatment.
Each hand position is held for a few minutes, and during this time healing energy will flow into you, balancing your energy system, releasing stress, soothing pain, and promoting your body’s natural ability to heal itself. As the energy flows, most people will feel warmth, or heat, or tingling from my hands. Some people report seeing different colors appear, or they feel like they are floating. It is also possible to experience an emotional release, as emotional distress is brought to the surface and removed.
Reiki brings the body, mind and spirit back into balance. And it provides you with an initial experience of what the outcome of following the system of Reiki can give you – a sense of well being, and peace.
What will I experience during the treatment?
These are some of the responses I have received from clients at the end of a session:
- Wow, that was amazing, you really can feel the energy!
- I think I fell asleep!
- I think I may have started snoring! my response: yes, yes, you did.
- I can’t believe how hot your hands got!
- My hip was killing me, it feels so much better now.
- I just feel so relaxed, I felt like I was floating on a cloud…
Everyone experiences Reiki differently. It is subjective, can be different from one session to another, and sometimes very subtle. Sometimes heat is felt from my hands, other times they feel wonderfully cool. Pulsations are sometimes felt where the hands are placed, or waves of energy can be experienced throughout the body.
Clients often comment how comforting they find the experience to be. An interesting study reported that recipients frequently feel that they are hovering in a threshold state of consciousness, simultaneously aware of their surroundings and deeply indrawn. Some people fall into a deep meditative state. Sometimes the session can provide a dramatic experience, while for other people, the first session in particular may feel somewhat *boring*, although they do feel somewhat better afterward, without being exactly sure why. The almost unaminous response is one of an almost immediate release of stress.
Reiki is cumulative and even people who don’t notice much the first time usually have progressively deeper experiences as they continue the treatments. Besides the immediate experience of the Reiki, there may be other changes that you begin to notice in the hours after the treatment: perhaps stronger digestion, a sense of being more grounded and calm and less on edge, and experiencing a great night’s sleep that night.
What happens after the session is over?
I am not there to deliver a diagnosis to you – that is not how Reiki works . I may make some common sense suggestions, like making sure you drink a lot of pure water to help flush out toxins, as well as listening to and following your body’s needs. I will also ask you if there were any observations or experiences you would like to share with me from the session.
Most people normally leave a Reiki session feeling extremely refreshed and grounded, though it is possible that you may feel more tired than usual that night. This does not mean that something went wrong, but rather as a sign that the body is responding to the healing, which is something that should be heeded. It is very common to report a sense of calm and mental clarity, and to sleep like a baby after Reiki!
It is also possible for healing reactions to occur – these can be in the form of physical issues (old injuries reemerging, flu like symptoms) or emotional (highs or lows experienced) ones. This is normal, as the body releases toxins and issues, and will only be temporary.
How many sessions should I receive?
If you are looking to address a particular condition, and particularly in the case of a serious health condition, it is best to consider a series of sessions. Three sessions, within a relatively short period of time, is considered the most beneficial approach. If you cannot do this, however, it will not diminish the effects of the treatments – it is just the best case scenario to be able to evaluate how Reiki can benefit you. The best way to space and schedule the sessions can be tailored to your availability and needs, and is best discussed personally.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
Reiki is not a substitute for medical care, however, it can and is used along side conventional medical care. Our practitioners are not doctors, nor medical professionals of any sort. A session is not meant to diagnose or treat an illness.
